Obituary: Joanne C. Wehling

October 13, 1927 ~ April 18, 2022

Joanne C. Wehling, 94, of Liberty Grove, died peacefully on April 18, 2022 at the Pete and Jelaine Horton Skilled Nursing and Hospice Care Facility in Sturgeon Bay after a lengthy illness. She was born in Peninsula State Park on October 13, 1927, the daughter of the late John and Ethel Kodanko.

After she graduated from Gibraltar High School in 1945, Joanne worked in Milwaukee then eventually in Denver CO. where she met her future husband, Harry Wehling. They were united in marriage on June 11, 1951, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Baileys Harbor. Harry and Joanne worked and started their family in the Denver area before moving back to Door County with their two children permanently in 1965. Harry and Joanne were blessed with over 60 years of marriage, together they enjoyed traveling, gardening, golf and most of all spending time with family and friends.  Joanne was of strong faith and a longtime member of Stella Maris Parish Catholic Church in Sister Bay. Heartfelt thanks to all of Joanne’s nieces, nephews, extended family and “card group” friends who brought much joy and happiness into Joanne’s life since Harry passed away in 2013.

Joanne will be missed by her son, John (Linda) Wehling; grandchildren, Libby and Breighly Wehling; sister in-law, Mary Frances Perry; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends.

Joanne was also preceded in death by her daughter, Janet Wehling; her parents; four sisters, Kathrine (Lawrence) Hanson, Laura (Norman) Tesnow, Marge (George) Potter, Marion (Gale) Bredson; and one brother, Fredrick.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, April 23, 2022, at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay with Fr. Anthony Birdsall officiating. Inurnment will be made this summer at St. Rosalia’s Cemetery in Sister Bay.

Friends may visit with the family at Huehns Funeral Home on Saturday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the service at 4:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Wisconsin Humane Society, Door County site in Joanne’s memory.

The family is grateful for the excellent care Joanne received from the nurses and staff at the Horton SNF the past several weeks. Thank you!
