Obituary: LCDR John Munson Storms, Jr., USN (Ret.)

March 28, 1952 ~ May 2, 2023

LCDR John Munson Storms, Jr., USN (Ret.), 71, of the Town of Gibraltar, died at home on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

He was born March 28, 1952 in Milwaukee, the son of John Munson Storms, Sr. and Marian Dorothy (Krause) Storms. John attended Boys’ Tech High School in Milwaukee and graduated with the class of 1970. That same year, he went on to serve his country with the United States Navy for 22 years. John studied nursing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he earned his bachelors degree. His career in nursing began with caring for patients while he was in the Navy in addition to overseeing various clinics. John was honorably discharged from the Navy with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

He moved to Door County in 1992. John continued his nursing career at Door County Memorial Hospital in Sturgeon Bay and then at Good Samaritan Society-Scandia Village in Sister Bay. Those who worked with John recall how “kindhearted” he was.

On February 15, 2003, John married Patricia Ann Schamber, together they resided in the Town of Gibraltar.

He was a member of the Henry S. Baid #174 Masonic Lodge in Sturgeon Bay for over 20 years. John always had an interest in gardening and was also a member of the Door County Master Gardeners for seven years. If he wasn’t in the garden, you could find him in his large workshop with his many tools and where he would spend his remaining time, tinkering. John loved to travel and always enjoyed vacation trips in both the spring and the fall.

He will be missed by beloved wife, Pat, with whom he was blessed to share over 20 years of marriage; two children, John Munson Storms, III (Michael Sypniewski) of Las Vegas, NV and Natalie (Ola Benson) Storms-Benson of Antioch, CA; stepdaughter, Aimee (Ira) Porter of West Bend; two step-grandchildren, Hailee and Owen Porter; two brothers, Richard (Jan) Storms of Hubertus and James (Kathy) Storms of West Bend; sisters-in-law, Leni Storms of Austin, TX and Donna Mortensen of Frisco, TX; nieces and nephews; other relatives; and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ronnie Storms; brother-in-law, Mark Mortensen; and other relatives.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay with his former coworker and friend, Chaplain Joy Zakrzewski, officiating. Military honors by the United States Navy and the Weber-Tess AMVETS Post 51 will follow at the funeral home.

Visitation for family and friends will be held at Huehns Funeral Home on Saturday, May 13, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. until the Masonic service at 1:40 p.m.
