As of Oct. 22, only a week into the state’s wolf hunt, 97 of the season quota of 251 wolves had been killed. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says that is about double the number during the same period last year in the state’s first wolf hunt.
Zone 2 closed to wolf hunting at 3 pm Oct. 23. The area, which includes parts of Florence, Forest, Langlade, Lincoln, Marinette, Oconto, Oneida and Vilas counties, had a cap of 28 wolves and 26 had been killed when the DNR announced the closure on Oct. 22.
Zone 1, which covers the state’s northwest corner, has 44 of its 76-wolf quote. Only three wolves have been taken in Zone 3, which has a 71-wolf quota and includes the northwestern counties of Burnett, Washburn, Rusk and Taylor. Zone 4, a large territory of furthest northeast Wisconsin, has also taken only three of its 12-wolf quota. Zone 5 in central Wisconsin reported 21 of 34 wolves killed.
Zone 6, the largest territory, which includes Door County, reports 12 wolves of the 30-wolf quota.
