Oscar Wilde’s timeless comedy The Importance of Being Earnest is on stage at Peninsula Players Theater, closing with a 4 pm matinee on Sunday, July 24.

Wilde was a poet, novelist, journalist and playwright who flourished in conversation with his brilliant wit. Saturday, July 23 the Players will host a free seminar titled “So, Why is Oscar Wilde so Darn Funny?” with Lawrence University Theater Chair, Timothy X. Troy.

Wilde was an Irishman with an Oxford education who moved to London to become famous, and he did. His literary works include the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and the plays Lady Windermere’s Fan, A Woman of No Importance, Salome, and An Ideal Husband. Wilde is perhaps known more for his epigrams – short, witty, and often paradoxical sayings. He is one of the most quoted authors of all time next to Mark Twain.

The Importance of Being Earnest is a brilliant comedy of mistaken identities, following Jack and Algernon as they navigate the perils of little white lies and frothy deceits as both English dandies assume the same false identity in pursuit of their lady loves.

The Peninsula Players perform Tuesdays through Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 7:30 pm. The closing 4 pm matinee performance will take place Sunday, July 24. Discount tickets are available for groups of 15 or more. Individual ticket prices range from $32 to $38.
