Helen Hecht

School: Gibraltar High School

School year: Junior

Sport: Basketball

Position: Point guard

Do you play other sports? Volleyball and softball

Do you prefer playing team or individual sports? Why? Team sports – I like working with a group of people…it’s more fun than working for individual accomplishments.

What’s your pre-game ritual? The team goes into the locker room and plays music. I get into the zone with the music, stretch and sit and chat.

What’s your favorite warm-up song? “Timber” by Ke$ha & Pitbull

What’s been your greatest sports moment so far? So far, beating Sevastopol this year. We held them to the record lowest points allowed in a girls basketball game [The Vikings won 53-12 at the Dec. 16 game.] It was a good win as a team…and Sevastopol is a good rivalry.

What’s been the worst? Probably in middle school when I first injured my knee, I’ve had knee problems ever since.

Is there an athlete – or anyone else – who inspires you? Makenna Ash. We’ve been playing eight seasons together…that’s who I look to to pass. She pushes me to work hard and she works hard to get into a position. She plays the other position [forward] and we work closely together.

What’s your favorite sports team to watch? I like watching the women’s U.S. Olympic basketball team because you can only watch them every four years.

Alexzander Johnson (Alex)

School: Washington Island High School

School year: Freshman

Sport: Basketball

Position: Point guard

Do you play other sports? Yes, I play soccer for Washington Island High School and Babe Ruth baseball on the Baileys Harbor A’s.

Do you prefer playing team or individual sports? Why? I prefer team sports because it’s more fun to play with friends.

What’s your pre-game ritual? We do a pre-game pump-up huddle in basketball, in which our captain gets us “pumped and ready” for the game by shouting as we shout back.

What’s your favorite warm-up song? None in particular.

What’s been your greatest sports moment so far? At the Babe Ruth All-Stars game in Eau Claire this past summer when I was playing with the Sturgeon Bay Bays, I hit a base hit that tied the score, and we eventually won the game.

Also, one time when I was goalie in soccer, the coach gave me permission to play the whole field so I took the opportunity to take the ball down the field and scored. That was a great feeling!

What’s been the worst? Once, I felt like I let my team down when I missed a three-pointer that would have won the basketball game for us.

Is there an athlete – or anyone else – who inspires you? I look up to my older teammates because they challenge me to play my hardest.

What’s your favorite sports team to watch? I love the intensity of watching football because every play counts.
