Public Hearing on Lake Levels Tomorrow

A public hearing to gather feedback on the St. Claire River Study will be held Tuesday at the Door Community Auditorium at 7 pm.

The study, commissioned by the International Joint Committee to determine if the river was draining water from Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, said 1962 dredging by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is not responsible for most of the 16-inch drop in water levels in the last 47 years. But other studies say otherwise, and the report has received a lot of scrutiny and criticism because scientific data has not been released for independent review.

The St. Claire runs between Lake Huron and Lake Erie. A previous study commissioned by a group of Canadian property owners blamed dredging for continued erosion that greatly increased the outflow of water from Lake Huron to Michigan, draining the two upper Great Lakes.
