Sevastopol High School recently wrapped up its fall sports season. The Pioneers competed in football, cross country and volleyball in addition to cooperative play with Gibraltar in boys soccer and Sturgeon Bay in girls swimming.

The Pioneer football team finished the regular season with a 7-2 record, the most wins in a season in program history and good for third in the Great 8 North Conference. They finished 0-1 in the postseason with a loss at the 8-man Jamboree.

Great 8 North All-Conference selections included Quin Schram as first-team wide receiver and first-team defensive back, Dylon Iverson as first-team tight end and second-team linebacker, Blake Bowden as first-team quarterback, Ethan Kroll as first-team defensive end, and Zach Christiansen received honorable mention as fullback.

Sevastopol’s cross country team, under the direction of sixth year head coach Chris Horvat, ended their season with several runners earning all-conference recognition in the Packerland Conference. Boys runners Cory Carlson and Isaiah Spetz were both selected to the first team with Lucas Stenzel earning second-team honors. Girls runners receiving recognition were Megan Stoneman, who was selected to the first team, and Maddie LeClair, who earned honorable mention.

The boys team finished third in their conference meet held at Gibraltar and later finished fifth out of nineteen teams in their Division 3 Sectional held at Sheboygan Lutheran, with Cory Carlson qualifying individually for state. Carlson finished 38th out of 152 runners at the state meet in Wisconsin Rapids.

The Pioneer volleyball team advanced to the regional semi-finals after defeating Elkhart Lake in the opening round of the WIAA Division 4 playoffs before being knocked out by the eventual regional champions, Hilbert, in the second round. This concluded a 10-19 regular season with a 1-1 postseason record while placing sixth in the Packerland Conference.

Mary Volkmann, finishing her sixth year at the helm, had four players earn all-conference recognition from her squad. Demi Ploor earned unanimous first team honors for her all-around play, Megan Kasten was selected as second-team libero, Anna Giblin received honorable mention as a setter, and Courtney Tebo received honorable mention for her all-around play.

The Gibraltar/Sevastopol Vikings boys soccer team, coached by Joe Warner, won their Division 4 regional playoff opener against Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran, but would later fall to Kewaunee in their regional final match. The Vikings’ regular season record stood at 11-10, going 1-1 in the postseason. They finished fourth out of ten teams in the newly formed Eastern Wisconsin/Packerland Conference. Sevastopol’s Millar Minahan earned second-team all-conference recognition for his play as a defender.

To round out Sevastopol’s fall sports recap, the Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol Clippers girls’ swim team are the 2015 Bay Conference Champions, edging out the Clintonville Truckers. The Clippers went 7-0 overall in their dual meets (6-0 in the conference) including a dual-meet victory over Clintonville earlier in the season. Despite a second-place finish in the conference meet held at Clintonville, the Clippers edged the Truckers in overall conference points.

It was an especially impressive season for the girls’ swim team, which fielded only eleven swimmers, significantly less than many of their opponents who field rosters of twenty or more. Of those eleven, four were Sevastopol athletes, all of which were freshman. Those freshmen include Molly Banks, Kaitlyn Schauske, Gale Chier and Maggie Hartman. Dave Bubnik’s team continues their postseason at the state competition on Nov. 13 & 14 at the University of Wisconsin – Madison Natatorium.
