Sheriff’s Office Warns of Phone Scams

The Door County Sheriff’s Office has been alerted about several possible phone scams occurring within the county. In one of the scams, the caller claims to be from Medicare and requests personal identifying information. In the other, the caller claims to be from a utility and threatens to shut off power if an outstanding balance is not paid within 30 minutes. The department offers these tips to avoid a phone scam:  Never send money to an alleged bill collector who threatens you; be wary of anyone who claims to represent official agencies and then requests personal information; keep your credit card, checking account and Social Security numbers to yourself.
