Soar On The Shore

Algoma’s Crescent Beach will be inundated with kites Aug. 19, 11 am – 4 pm, for the 9th Soar on the Shore Kite and Beach Festival. This event is presented by Friends of Crescent Beach and the Algoma Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Wisconsin Kiters Club will provide stunt kites, giant display kites and a children’s kite candy drop/candy blasting at 1 pm. With favorable winds, this club can “paint the sky’ with color and movement. Kiters from the competitive stunt teams Fire & Ice and Three Sheets perform to music. Kiters will also be available to answer questions and give newcomers some valuable tips. There will be a public fly area for people to fly their own kites.

Children are invited to participate in crafts (while supplies last), street games, a scavenger hunt and playing in the sand with toys. There will be easels available for aspiring plein air artists. Mischief & Magic will provide twisted balloon creations and face painting. Create a kite pendant necklace with CTI Hospitality, or a kite suncatcher with Art Beet Kewaunee.

New this year is the Peninsula Reptile House who will provide reptile education and offer meet and greet sessions with some of their unique creatures. At 11:30 am, Bob Desh, former director of the Door County Maritime Museum, will fire a cannon in period costume and answer questions about the area’s maritime history.

Smokin’ Tom’s Team Barbeque will be serving up barbeque fare, and The Algoma Boy Scouts will be selling nachos and popcorn. Algoma’s Destination Imagination will sell sweet corn.

All activities are weather dependent. A rain date is scheduled for Aug. 20 at the same time.
