Southern Door Board Urged to Keep Greenhouse Project

A former Southern Door School board member and FFA supporter on Monday urged the school board not to ignore a voter-approved greenhouse project. The district decided last month to temporarily drop the greenhouse and a bus-mechanics garage from a $14.9 million list of capital-improvement projects approved by voters.

Pamela Parks, who served on the school board for more than a decade, spoke to the board on behalf of the Future Farmers of America (FFA), saying FFA leaders and members would like to receive regular updates on the potential greenhouse project.

She also encouraged the board and the district to form a greenhouse committee.

Board president Penny Price said community members can’t directly put items and proposals on board agendas, but said she could put an item on an upcoming agenda seeking “an update on the formation of a greenhouse committee.”

Also Monday, resident Tara Pierre asked the school board to welcome ideas to find teachers for positions that the district was unable to fill. The district received notices late in the summer that an English Language Arts and a science teacher found jobs at other districts. Price said Pierre also expressed concern about the district not yet finding a metals teacher.
