Syttende Mai Celebrated in Sturgeon Bay

For the 34th year, the H.R. Holand Lodge, Sons of Norway will celebrate Syttende Mai (pronounced sutna mi). Norwegians county-wide are invited to join the group for a pot luck Tuesday, May 12, 6 pm, at Bay View Lutheran Church, 340 W Maple, Sturgeon Bay.

Special to all Norwegians, Syttende Mai marks the date when Norway’s first Constitution was signed on May 17, 1814 and is joyously celebrated worldwide. In 1829, Norway separated from Swedish control and has promoted a lifelong commitment for human rights, equality, freedom and democracy.

In addition to the potluck, the evening will feature a video presentation that highlights parades and other celebrations in Norway. Stories commemorating the history of this event will also be included.

The local lodge actively promotes Norwegian heritage with various activities throughout the year, such as offering Norsk Fest in August, the Lutefisk dinner in November, teaching craft and language classes, and awarding scholarships to graduates of Norwegian descent. Food and fellowship is a mainstay of the organization.

The public is invited. For more information call 920.746.8925
