The Nature Conservancy Celebrates Preserve Addition

About 75 people attended a recent celebration of the addition of 29.6 acres to the Judy Abert Meissner Memorial Wetlands Preserve near Kangaroo Lake, just outside of Baileys Harbor.

The Conservancy established the original 42-acre preserve in 2005 with a gift from the family of the late Judy Abert Meissner. The preserve provides breeding habitat for the federally endangered Hine’s emerald dragonfly and is a spawning site for Northern Pike, a species critical to the health of the aquatic system.

To purchase the addition, the Conservancy received a grant of $213,336 from Wisconsin’s Knowles Nelson State Stewardship Fund. A gift from the Meissner family and a grant from the Door County Green Fund will complete the purchase and support an endowment for the long-term care of the property.
