The People Behind the Page: Kait Shanks

The Peninsula Pulse employs 24 full- and part-time staff members who live in or have strong ties to Door County. This crew brings you the news in print, on video, online and in podcasts every week. In each edition of the Pulse, we’ll introduce you to one of the people behind the page. This week, meet Kait Shanks, handler of the legal notices – and so much more.

Kait Shanks loves beer and traveling, so her favorite times are the Door County Beer Festival and when she’s crossing places off her to-visit list. In the office, she handles our legal notices, proofreads ads and works with Peninsula Pacers on events such as the beer fest. Read more about Kait in an extended Q&A below.

Celeste Benzschawel (CB): Where did you grow up?

Kait Shanks (KS): Belvidere, Illinois

CB: What brought you to the Pulse, and what is your role here?

KS: I live in Baileys Harbor and was looking for something closer to home – I was tired of the “commute” to Sturgeon Bay. Plus, the summer before I started, I had two different people ask me if I worked at the Pulse – it was fate. I handle the legals, do a lot of ad proofing and some internal account management, and help with Peninsula Pacer events.

CB: What is your favorite part about working here?

KS: My co-workers and the office environment. The music some days … not so much.

CB: What’s the last thing you were really excited about?

KS: Traveling to Ireland and seeing all of that history and how even some of the “newest” old things there can quite possibly be older than anything old in the United States. It’s crazy! Crossed off on my places-to-visit list!

I also enjoy getting to know all of the breweries and brewers who bring in the beer for the Door County Beer Festival.
