The Vespus Marimba Band Brings Eclectic Repertoire to TAP

The Vespus Marimba Band, a favorite in the Southwest, is coming to Third Avenue Playhouse (TAP) as part of their new Main Stage Performance Series. Featuring music from Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, and the Caribbean, as well as jazz, ragtime, classical, and originals, Vespus is a one-of-a-kind ensemble that provides a unique concert experience.

Never content to play just one style, the band often veers into an exciting jazz-fusion sound. The combination of marimbas, guitars, drums and other instruments create a warm, festive sound that guarantees an evening of musical enjoyment.

The musicians met at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. They have since pursued varied paths and reside across the United States, coming together for various gigs.

The band includes Hovey Dean, John Bartlit, Dr. Douglas Nottingham, Craig McClelland and Daniel Ward. Not satisfied to play one style of music, Vespus members also make up the core of two other music ensembles – The Links Ensemble, dedicated to performing contemporary avant-garde music, and the Skumbaag Show, described as America’s only Heavy-Metal vaudeville troupe.

The Vespus Marimba Band performs on July 29 at 2 pm. For more information visit http://www.sonicabsurdities.com/vespus.htm.
