This Weekend in Door County: Folk Festival, Sea Kayak Symposium and More

The festivities in Door County don’t stop after the Fourth of July weekend! In fact, we are in the midst of the most happenin’ time of the summer here on the peninsula. Check out this weekend’s highlights below.

Festivals and Celebrations

Door County Folk Festival 

Stop by Baileys Harbor this weekend (July 10-14) to participate in the 40th annual Door County Folk Festival. This celebration of folklore through music and dance includes highlights such as ethnic folk dance workshops, dance parties, a bring-your-own dessert social, a traditional Door County fish boil, and live music by Izvor Orchestra. Belgian Days 

The 58th annual fundraiser for Brussel’s Lions Club will take place this year on July 13th and 14th at Brussels Town Park. On Saturday (July 13), gates open at 7 am and homemade fresh Belgian waffles are available from 8 am-11 am. Participate in the Belgian Days Run-Walk (1, 2 and 4 mile routes) at 8 am and then indulge at food stands featuring traditional Belgian food. Highlights also include a cornhole tournament and live music from Texas ‘55 and Spice. On Sunday, don’t miss the parade at 10:30 am and music all day by Modern Day Drifters. Read more>>

Freedom Fest

Join Sister Bay in celebrating the 3rd annual Freedom Fest on Saturday (July 13) from 10 am-10 pm. The celebration will take place at Sister Bay Marina Park and will feature brats, hamburgers, refreshments, kids activities and fireworks at dusk. 

Bastille Day Celebration

Celebrate French Independence Day at Ecology Sports in Sister Bay, on Sunday (July 14), from  4-8 pm. The celebration will feature live music by Lynn Gudmundson and David Hatch, freshly made crepes, beer and wine, and late shopping at Ecology and its courtyard shops.

Rutabaga Door County Sea Kayak Symposium 

This weekend, July 12-14, stop by Rowleys Bay Resort for the 16th annual Rutabaga Door County Sea Kayak Symposium. The Symposium will include on-water classes, guided tours along Door County’s shorelines and bluffs for all skill levels, food, beer, an ice cream social and an auction to benefit the Door County Land Trust. Fine Art 

Art, Craft and Amish Quilt Sale 

Jacksonport Craft Cottage and Gifts’ Art, Craft and Amish Quilt Sale will be hosted by Mr. G’s Hall on Friday (July 12) from 9 am-5 pm. Browse 100 Amish-made quilts in a variety of popular styles, patterns and colors, and many other items. Don’t miss the quilting and crafting demonstrations that will take place throughout the day. Lily Bay Lakeshore Artisan Crawl 

From 10 am-5 pm (July 12-14), stroll or drive the half mile of North Lake Michigan Drive in Sturgeon Bay and walk into local working artisans’ spaces to see how their products are crafted. A portion of sales will be donated to Habitat for Humanity, Neighbor-to-Neighbor, and HELP of Door County. Read more>>

More opportunities to experience fine art in Door County… 

Drop-in art making experiences for children and family members of all ages will take place throughout the day on Friday (July 12) at Family Drop-In Friday at the Peninsula School of Art in Fish Creek. Art/Speaks, a free ekphrastic writing lab for those interested in writing in response to art, will take place Friday (July 12), from 11 am-12 pm, at Edgewood Orchard Galleries.

Music and Performance 

I’m With Her and Yola Carter perform this Friday (July 12) at the Door Community Auditorium. I’m With Her features three celebrated songwriters coming together to create music in the styles of Americana, bluegrass, folk, and gospel. Singer-songwriter and special guest Yola Carter joins the group from Bristol, England. Visit dcauditorium.org for more information and to purchase tickets. 

On Friday (July 12) bring a blanket and chairs to Baileys Harbor and enjoy the latest free concert in the Baileys Harbor Concerts in the Park series. Zachary Scott Johnson will perform from 5-7 pm.

Door County Triathlon 

This year’s Door County Triathlon – which includes a Sprint Distance Event, a Half Iron Man and a Kid’s Triathlon – will take place this Saturday and Sunday (July 13-14). View the full schedule of events here

Stop by Potawatomi State Park on Friday (July 12) for Potawatomi Activities, Whitefish Dunes State Park on Saturday (July 13) for Whitefish Dunes Activities, and Peninsula State Park on Saturday (July 13) for Pen Park Activities

View a Movie in Martin Park Friday (July 12) at dusk (around 8:30 pm). This week will feature the movie “Wonder.”

Meet the 2019 Honey Queen at Lautenbach’s Orchard Country Winery & Market on Friday (July 12) from 11 am- 12 pm to learn about the importance of honeybees as pollinators in our communities. 

Outdoor Markets

Farmers Markets offer great opportunities to support the local farmers, artists and small businesses of Door County. This weekend, check out Egg Harbor Farmers Market (June 21, 9 am-1 pm), Corner of the Past Farmers Market (June 22, 8 am-12 pm), Farm and Craft Market (June 22, 8:30 am-12 pm), Maplewood Farmers Market (June 22, 2 pm-6 pm) and Baileys Harbor Farmers Market (June 23, 9 am-1 pm). 

The first of three vintage marketsorganized by the Liberty Grove Historical Society, will take place on Saturday (July 13) from 10 am- 2 pm.
