Vikings Conquer Clippers in Girls Basketball

Gibraltar’s girls basketball team trailed early Saturday before going on to win at home in Packerland Conference action over Sturgeon Bay, 52-40.

“Sturgeon Bay had already played two competitive games after the holiday break before Saturday, and from game to game, they dare their opponents to beat them, so they would be more game-ready than us,” said Vikings head coach Evan DeBroux. “It sometimes showed as they jumped to an early lead and edged us in the second half. We also did not shoot the ball particularly well outside of 15 feet, which could be attributed to not playing a competitive game for over two weeks.”

Gibraltar, which held a 30-17 halftime advantage, had three players end up scoring in double figures led by Andie Schar with 20 points. Anna Jarosh added 12 points, with Mikala Gorham scoring 10 more.

“Offensively, our players did a great job attacking weaknesses in their tightly packed zone defenses to find points in the low and high posts,” DeBroux said. “We executed the game plan and deservedly ran out as winners on our home court.”

The Clippers were led by Dasha Yeltysheva with her career-high 31 points. Cady Carlson added eight points.

Gibraltar, which evened its season record to 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the Packerland, next plays a conference game Thursday at Peshtigo.
