Volunteer Center of Door County Closes

The Volunteer Center’s board of directors has made the difficult decision to close the center’s doors, effective immediately.

When the center began as a Leadership Door County initiative, many nonprofits did not have a web presence, and there was no central place where community members could find volunteer opportunities. Now most local nonprofits have websites to promote their opportunities, and search engines have taken over matching volunteer interests to local needs. These changes, along with ongoing financial stress and staffing difficulty, have led to this decision.

Through the years, the Volunteer Center of Door County has been dedicated to connecting community members with volunteer opportunities that align with their interests and goals, creating a greater sense of community and meeting the needs of local nonprofits. With hundreds of such organizations in the Door County area, the need for volunteers – and the interest in volunteering – have been great.

The center has also been well known for the programs it ran. One was the Sunrise Ambassador Program, through which adult volunteers led and encouraged children to get excited about giving back to their community.

On a larger scale, the Volunteer Center held the annual Golden Heart Awards to celebrate some of the community’s most active volunteers. During its 18 years of hosting this event, the center has given more than $55,000 to nonprofits to help them carry out their missions and more than $11,000 in scholarships to college-bound Door County graduates.

The need to promote community engagement and recognize outstanding volunteers remains vital, and the Volunteer Center’s board will continue to be advocates of promoting and stewarding volunteers.

The center has appreciated the support of the Door County community and thanks every donor, sponsor and volunteer for their gifts of their time, talent and generosity. Please direct questions or concerns to the board of directors at 920.746.7704.
