Voter Clarification for Town of Gibraltar’s Aug. 31 Special Meeting

Electors in the Town of Gibraltar will vote on the purchase of a $1.4 million property to expand the Fish Creek Beach on Aug. 31 at 7 pm at a special town meeting. After U.S. District Judge James Peterson ruled 2011 changes to voter ID law unconstitutional at the end of July 2016, the Pulse clarifies who can vote in Gibraltar on Aug. 31.

An elector must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old and have lived in the Town of Gibraltar for at least 10 days prior to the vote with no intent to move. Seasonal residents who maintain a permanent address outside of Gibraltar will not be able to vote, even if they have lived in the town for 10 days prior to the vote.

Electors do not need to bring proof of residence, but they will be required to sign a certification at the meeting stating they are a qualified town elector.

Wisconsin state attorneys attempted to appeal Judge Peterson’s decision, but the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit refused to block the decision on Monday, ensuring the rules listed above are upheld for Gibraltar’s Aug. 31 vote.
