‘Welcome to Door County’ Sign Back Soon

Motorists on Highway 57 might not see the “Welcome to Door County” sign lit in late winter and early spring, said Burke Pinney, director of Door County Parks. But fear not: It will shine again, Burke said, and well before Memorial Day.

The sign facing south at the southern county line dates to 2008, when the county moved the old sign to County X along Highway 42.

Some of the letters in the lighted 2008 sign had developed cracks, and the electrical work needed attention. Freezing and thawing caused some of the damage, and to prevent leaking, the top of the sign needed repair from hail damage. The refurbished sign will also have less nesting space for birds, Pinney said.

Elevate 97, which acquired the company that installed the sign, should begin work soon. Pinney said the county has budgeted for the project for two years now.
