Wence and Sandra Martinez Exhibit at Smithsonian Craft Show

“Flechas,” flatweave tapestry by Wence Martinez.

Wence and Sandra Martinez of Martinez Studio are one of 121 of America’s finest artists and craftsmen chosen to exhibit at the 31th Annual Smithsonian Craft Show.

Exemplifying innovation, creativity and technical merit, the Smithsonian Craft Show features superb craft artists from across the country. Each of this year’s exhibitors reflects the story of a contemporary American craft in specific categories. The exhibitors were selected from over 1,200 applicants.

Wence and Sandra Martinez were selected in the Decorative Fiber category for their contemporary flat woven tapestries. Dedicated to the traditional methods and materials of his Zapotec heritage, Wence weaves with hand-spun wool he dyes personally. His 45 years of weaving brings the technical expertise required to achieve Sandra’s elegant curves and his own dense patterns. Honored to debut at the 2013 Smithsonian Craft Show, it is the couple’s first appearance on the national juried show circuit.
