Work on Phase Two renovations at Anclam Park in Baileys Harbor delayed

 • Work on Phase Two renovations at Anclam Park in Baileys Harbor has been delayed because of the federal sequester. Because of a delay in the transfer of federal funds to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the project was pushed back to fiscal year 2014. The soonest the project could begin is this July, but it’s likely that work won’t start until the end of the summer season.

At its April 16 meeting, the Door County Board of Supervisors voted to retain Highway Department staff that were supposed to be temporarily laid off this year.

The vote on the measure came in at 17 to 4, with Supervisor Leo Zipperer arguing that the Highway Department agreed to the temporary layoffs in order to keep the department’s health insurance contributions lower. Supporters argued the county would have to pay $135,000 in unemployment to the 38 workers who would be affected, while necessary road repairs went undone.

Sevastopol’s cable access station was recognized recently with five awards from Wisconsin Community Media, a professional member organization with 55 public access stations in Wisconsin.

Laddie Chapman, program director of the public access station that operates from the Sevastopol Town Hall in Institute, updated the community at the annual town meeting on April 16 on the five awards, which included Achievement Awards for coverage of the Sturgeon Bay Bass Fishing Tournament and the Lumberjack Supper at the Sturgeon Bay United Methodist Church; Merit Awards for coverage of the Jacksonport Polar Bear Plunge and for a piece on The Garden Door at the Peninsular Agricultural Research Station; Best in Show for coverage of the June 11, 2012, Sevastopol FFA Dairy Breakfast at the Henschel farm. Charter cable subscribers can watch the Sevastopol station on Channel 986. Chapman said all of the award-winning videos can also be seen on YouTube.
