Workforce Housing In Our Backyard

A number of reports indicate that working people and their families have a difficult time finding affordable housing in Door County, a place dominated by tourism. These hard-working individuals serve the needs of many of us and provide the economic backbone for the county. Adequate, convenient housing is one of their greatest needs. Local government and the media have also highlighted this need.

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Door Co. (UUFDC), Ephraim, will sponsor a forum June 17 to explore the issues of affordable workforce housing in Northern Door County.

This forum entitled “Workforce Housing in Our Backyard” will bring together experts representing a variety of perspectives. Three panel members will each speak on a different aspect of the issue, followed by questions from the audience. The panelists are Robert Kufrin, Sister Bay Village Administrator, discussing a governmental perspective; Rick Nelson, the director of the Door County Habitat for Humanity, representing a public non-governmental organization; and Joseph White, the head of the Housing Empowerment Development Company (HEDC) in Milwaukee, a private organization.

The topic was selected by the UUFDC’s Social Responsibility Committee in keeping with their focus on “Economic Injustice.”

The forum on Workforce Housing will be held at the UUFDC’s new location, 10341 Hwy. 42, Ephraim, at the south end of the Green Gables Shops. It begins at 7 pm June 17 and the public is encouraged to attend.
