World War II Exhibit at Door County Maritime Museum

In February, a new exhibit has taken over the second-floor landing of the Door County Maritime Museum (dcmm.org) in Sturgeon Bay. Built for Battle: Sturgeon Bay Ships in World War II highlights the warships constructed in Door County and the experiences of their crews during the tumultuous years of the 1940s. This exhibit brings to life the big stories of bravery, sacrifice and tragedy aboard small ships during great engagements upon the waves.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII. As a center of shipbuilding during this time, Sturgeon Bay produced hundreds of vessels to supply the war effort. The new exhibit also explores what happened to these vessels after they left their freshwater docks; most never returned to the Great Lakes.
