Writing and Art Collide in Conversation at Write On

Poet and writer Camille LeFevre and artist Rebecca Carlton of Juddville Clay will join forces for a conversation about writing inspired by visual arts on Thursday, June 15 at Write On, Door County.

LeFevre was awarded this year’s Dick Scuglik Memorial Residency and Fellowship at Write On. Over the past months, the writer and artist have exchanged work and created new work in response. They will share their new work and discuss their creative process.

Sculptor and installation artist Rebecca Carlton is the visual artist for the 2023 Fellowship. Along with her life partner, Tony Staroska, she owns Juddville Contemporary Clay Studio and Gallery in Fish Creek. Her Public Art, Sonoran Circumvolution and Dragons of Character, are on permanent display in Tucson, Arizona, as well as privately funded works at Michigan Technological University and Door County Medical Center. She has been a fellowship recipient from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Getty Center for the Arts and the Fulbright Fund.

For more than 30 years, Camille LeFevre has been a St. Paul, MN-based arts journalist covering visual arts, dance, architecture, design, theater, and music for regional and national publications (online and print). Her books include The Dance Bible: The Complete Guide for Aspiring Dancers, and Charles R. Stinson Architects: Compositions in Nature. She practices ekphrasis, and her poetry appears in The Ekphrastic Review and Thin Air Magazine.

As the director of NewStudio Gallery in St. Paul, her programming has included the workshop, “The Art of Writing on Art: Ekphrastic Prose & Poetry,” which she originated and taught. She is also working on a memoir. She regularly facilitates artist talks at museums and galleries. Currently, Camille lives in Northern Arizona, returning North in the summers to enjoy the Midwest’s woods and waters. She teaches “Writing About Art” online at the Institute of American Indian Art, and her syllabus includes an ekphrasis component.

The program is free at Write On, Door County (4210 Juddville Road, Fish Creek) and runs from 6:30 – 8 pm at the Writing Center.
