30th Annual Candlelight Ski/Hike/Snowshoe Event at Newport

Thirty years ago, Newport State Park initiated Door County’s candlelight-ski tradition. This year it will hold its 30th annual candlelight ski/hike/snowshoe event Feb. 8, 5:30-8:30 pm, when a portion of the trail will come alive by candlelight, guiding skiers, hikers and snowshoers into a glowing, magical winter wonderland.

Park staff and Newport Wilderness Society volunteers will place 300-plus candles to guide participants down a 1.2-mile wooded trail section. Candlelight skiing requires no special talent or technique, and the trail terrain is flat, which suits all skiing abilities. Also feel free to hike or snowshoe the trail.

Participants may start at the picnic-area parking lot 3 anytime between 5:30 and 8:30 pm. At the end of the lit trail, the shelter building will welcome participants with an outdoor bonfire, a lit fireplace and refreshments. Grills will also be available for those who want to provide their own picnic-supper or marshmallow-roast supplies.

The event is free, but a Wisconsin State Park vehicle-admission sticker is required. To learn more or review current conditions, call Newport State Park at 920.854.2500. The candlelight ski/hike/snowshoe event will be held with or without adequate skiing snow.
