3rd Annual Kermiss Celebration

The Family Centers of Door County and the Peninsula Belgian American Club are hosting their 3rd Annual Kermiss Celebration on Sunday, September 12 from 11 am – 4 pm at the newly established Southern Door Family Center in Brussels. The event features authentic Belgian and American food, drinks, music, a Cooyah card tournament, a historical presentation by Barb Chisholm, children’s games, and a dedication ceremony for the new Family Center facility.

The event will also include a concert by John Lardinois of North Dakota. The show, from 1 – 3 pm features Lardinois and his son John Owen Lardinois, also known as “Fiddlin’ Johnny,” whose fiddle music has been nominated for a Grammy and who can be heard on the soundtrack to many of Ken Burns’ documentaries. Also performing are Ken and Karen Stillman of Sturgeon Bay, former members of the popular Wisconsin bluegrass band, Thunder Mountain.

Historically, the Kermiss was a chance for those of Belgian descent to gather and give thanks for the harvest at the end of the summer season. The custom was brought from Europe by Belgian settlers when they immigrated to the United States.

The Southern Door Family Center is located at 1400 Country Road DK in Burssels. For more information call Executive Director Gina Wautier at 920.495.1062 or John Lardinois at 701.426.7073 or visit http://www.familycentersdc.com.
