A Few “Earth Week” Events

April 18

Crossroads at Big Creek, Sturgeon Bay

2 pm. Door County Invasive Species Team Meeting: “Shorelines.” Dr. Val Klump with the Milwaukee School of Freshwater Science will give an overview of the large-scale ecological impacts to the Great Lakes that can be witnessed at Door County beaches. Carrie Webb will present on beach grooming regulations and answer questions about invasive species problems.

2pm. Discover the Land Trust of Door County: Meet Terry Cooper, who will present information on the Door County Land Trust and different ways to get involved in helping permanently protect over 5,500 acres of land.

April 21

Newport State Park, Ellison Bay, 920.854.2500

9am-noon and 1-4pm. Work Day: Join park personnel and Newport Wilderness Society volunteers to help prepare trails and campsites for spring hiking, biking and camping. Lunch will be provided. Call to register for this event.

2-4pm. Sustainable Gardening: Join Beth Coleman, “The Garden Lady” for coffee and conversation. We’ll talk about earth-friendly garden design, low-maintenance plants, and other practices that are easy on the earth.

7pm. Green Door Film Society Screening: A controversial, thought-provoking, artistic and independent film in the loft above the deli. A natural and organic dinner special will be available starting at 6pm. Reservations requested.

April 22

– All day. Rachel Carson Reflection Trail: An on-your-own half-mile walk on White Cedar Trail looking for favorite Carson quotes and biographical facts.

– 10-11am. Bat House Workshop. Assemble a pre-cut bat house kit crafted by an Eagle Scout. Pre-register by calling the Nature Center. $10/kit. One kit/family.

– 2pm. Starting Your Plants From Seed: Meet Tom Horsley from “Horsley Gardens” and get advice to start your plants from seeds in a green house.

7pm. Live Music: Local favorites and talented musicians, Katie Dahl and Jess Holland unite in concert!

April 23

– All day. Rachel Carson Reflection Trail: An on-your-own half-mile walk on White Cedar Trail looking for favorite Carson quotes and biographical facts.

– 1-2pm. Woodsy Egg Hunt: Learn about the real Peter Rabbit, sing songs about bunnies, then walk to find eggs. Designed for kids 10 and under. $1 donation/child.

– 10:30am-5pm. Art in the Park: Newport Wilderness Society and Newport State Park personnel invite artists, photographers and poets of all ages and abilities to come to the park to paint, photograph or write poems about scenes in the park. 4:30-5pm. Reading and sharing of the work created throughout the day will take place at the shelter off of Lot 3.

– 5-6pm. Earth Day Sing-along: Katie Dahl will lead an Earth Day sing-along around a bonfire near the shelter.

2pm. Book Discussion and Signing: Join Dr. Holly Phaneuf as she discusses the benefits of herbs and how chemicals in popular herbal supplements might work. She will also sign copies of her book, Herbs Demystified.

April 27

The Ridges Sanctuary, Baileys Harbor, 920.839.2802

Noon-2pm. Picnic for the Planet: Pack a lunch that exemplifies the concepts of eating green, smart and local in celebration of the planet we live on, the food it provides and the people we share it with. Enjoy great company during lunch around the campfire and a guided hike after lunch.

April 30

Scandia Village Good Samaritan, Sister Bay

9am. Scandia Village Spring Clean Up: Volunteers are needed to help with grounds clean up. A free picnic lunch will be provided by Scandia Village and will be prepared by members of the Kiwanis Club of Northern Door. Please RSVP to Nicki Scharrig at 920.854.2317.
