A Gain of 74 Acres at Crossroads

In 2014, in addition to offering a record number of educational programs, Crossroads at Big Creek added 74 acres to the preserve. Early in the year, The Nature Conservancy gave them the Ida Bay Preserve. Then, on Dec. 19, thanks to a number of foundations and generous donors, Crossroads was able to purchase the nine-acre parcels called Big Creek Cove. Both properties are gifts that will be shared with the community.

Plans for 2015 include: structural and environmental upgrades on the Collins Learning Center; beginning the Lower Level Learning Space project; native plantings to create a Bird and Butterfly Garden; beginning work on the Jim Maki Arboretum; and creating management plans for newly acquired properties.

On Jan. 2 at 2 pm, nature journaling will be the featured activity for learners of all ages. Each participant will receive (free of charge) a blank journal for recording nature observations. After sharing ideas for journaling, participants will make and share their first entries of 2015.

On Jan. 3 at 1 pm join the naturalist for snow sowing – a wildflower planting expedition. In snow sowing, wildflower seeds are scattered on the snow surface. The native seeds will plant themselves as winter turns into spring.

Both of these events are free and open to the public. Participants should meet at the Collins Learning Center, located at 2041 Michigan St. in Sturgeon Bay. The Collins Learning Center is open 2 – 4:30 pm daily and during scheduled activities. Trails always are open, but designated ski trails are for skiing only. Check CrossroadsatBigCreek.org for current ski conditions.
