A New Flash in the Pan

“The Romeo” by Mara L. Manning

There’s more flash at Mr. Helsinki in Fish Creek than just Chef Joe’s flambéed crepes. Beginning August 30 a new series of quirky, retro-inspired mixed-media oil paintings will be found at the hip restaurant and wine bar above the Fish Creek Market on Main Street.

“Flash,” an exhibit of works by Mara L Manning explores the sometimes-stereotypical methods by which previous generations were taught to read. Manning pairs sets of images to describe the path that boys and girls stepped along in the early 1960s. She explores these connections with a variety of media on wood panel and canvas. Manning has also included a number of minimal landscapes in the exhibition.

Mr. Helsinki will host an artist reception on September 1 from 5:30 – 7pm. Manning, an artist/teacher at Ashwaubenon High in Green Bay for 18 years, has been painting for over 25 years. Her work has been included in a variety of juried exhibitions in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and Wisconsin including the Wisconsin Artists Biennial and the Bonifas Art Center’s “Northern Exposure” exhibition, where she was the recipient of a purchase prize award.
