A Clutch of Summer Blooms

I.
In school I couldn’t read the chart,
so I learned the letters
all by heart.   L
                    T E
                   D F A
                 O T C L
               V E C H Z L
            T O Z C E L D F

II.
Tell me madame
why you weep.
Is your lover quite dead,
or only asleep?

III.
To make a square knot
and get it tight,
first right over left,
then left over right.

IV.
A sure sign
you have attained to maturity
is that you no longer read
the messages
on cereal boxes.

V.
Survival
rather than victory
is the goal.
