Baseball Pioneers Split Twin Bill with Bulldogs

Sevastopol’s baseball team split its Packerland Conference baseball doubleheader it hosted Saturday against Peshtigo.

The Pioneers dropped the first game to the Bulldogs, 8-1.

Sevastopol committed more errors in the field (six) than tallied hits at the plate (five) and didn’t score until the bottom of the sixth when Drake Olson batted in a run. Logan Schuh recorded the team’s only extra-base hit with a double.

Olson started on the mound for the Pioneers and recorded the loss over 3 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs, four earned, on six hits with four walks and a hit batter while striking out four. Frankie de Young closed out the final 3 1/3 innings, allowing an unearned run while striking out three.

Game two ended in dramatic fashion with Sevastopol pulling out a 4-3 victory over Peshtigo when Schuh tagged out the Bulldogs’ Canon Bickel at the plate to prevent the tying run from scoring.

The Pioneers nine hits included two apiece from Tyler Grooters, Chase Haberli, Gavin Jorns and de Young. Jorns and Grooters each doubled.

Haberli pitched 6 1/3 innings in the win, allowing three earned runs on five hits with a walk and a hit batter while striking out six. Oliver Mathews worked the final two-thirds of an inning and recorded the save, allowing only one hit.

Up next for Sevastopol is a non-conference game Tuesday at Kohler before hosting a league doubleheader April 23 against Kewaunee.
