Bat Program at Newport State Park

Did you know the bat species makes up nearly one quarter of the planet’s mammal diversity? These superheroes of the night sky are responsible for worldwide pest control, seed dispersal and pollination, among other benefits. However, the hibernating bats of North America are rapidly disappearing from a fungal disease, white-nose syndrome (WNS), which has caused the most precipitous die-off in North American wildlife in recorded history.

Jennifer Redell, WDNR bat biologist, will teach about the importance of these amazing animals at the program “Bats Live! Nature’s Night-time Superheroes” on June 24, 7 pm, at Newport State Park. Redell will be accompanied by live bat ambassadors. There will be a bat survey done after the presentation using an Anabat echolocation device. Meet in the Nature Center, Lot 1.
