BBQ is on the Menu on Washington Island

Thirty teams are competing in the 2nd Annual Death’s Door BBQ at the Washington Island Airport Saturday, Aug. 24. Sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, pitmasters will be vying for $7,500 in prize money.

Organizer Lisa Gibson says the competitors are coming from throughout the Midwest for this year’s event, including two BBQ teams from Door County – Casey’s BBQ & Smokehouse from Egg Harbor and the Shoulders, Butts & Bellies team led by Curt Campbell of The Oilerie in Fish Creek. Nineteen of the teams will be selling their smoky products to the public, and other food vendors will be on site throughout the day.

In addition to the expanded list of contestants, vendors and activities, another highlight of this year’s event will be a raffle that includes a pair of 40-yard line seats to the Monday night Nov. 4 Packers/Bears game. This grand prize also includes a two night stay at the Astor House B & B in Green Bay. Raffle tickets are available now for $5 each at Mann’s, the Red Cup, the Danish Mill and the Washington Island Ferry Office. The raffle drawing will be at 4 pm on Saturday, just before the BBQ awards ceremony.

Ted Yoder, National Hammered Dulcimer Champion, will perform from 1:30 until 3:30. Ted creates complex rhythms and unusual harmonics, playing the hammered dulcimer almost like a piano.
