Bike to Work Week

Yesterday afternoon, my editor forwarded me an announcement about this being National Bike to Work Week. I thought I’d do my part by spreading the word in Pulse Picks today, then realized I couldn’t just take the reporter’s way out – I would have to practice what I preach.

In a couple minutes I’ll hop on my bike to peddle the 10 miles or so to work. Of course, this had to come just as the bosses moved the office a couple miles further from my house, and I haven’t been riding much of late. This could take a while, and it could hurt.

I can’t complain about the new office. The water view, the short jaunt to coffee, and the proximity to the town hall and basketball courts are all nice neighborhood perks. So is Nelson’s Hardware – a surprisingly frequent stop – and perhaps too enticing, the Cornerstone Pub, which stares us down with its neon-tinted eyes every day (this doesn’t help with the writer’s block).

But I’m more concerned about my office mates. I’ve been known to sweat a bit when I exercise. We don’t have showers at the new office in Baileys Harbor, and I’m not tough enough to hop in the lake just yet.

The boss put a window between my office and my editor’s, a nice touch meant to make communication easier and free us from the isolation of the standard office cubes. But I’m guessing that window will stay closed this morning.
