Birch Creek’s Big Band Jazz Swings Again

Big Band Jazz Session I is in full swing at Birch Creek, with faculty and students performing on the outdoor stage in front of the Dutton Concert Barn. The program includes songs by Big Band legends, including Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Billy Strayhorn and Jelly Roll Morton.

World-class jazz talent arrives in Door County each summer from across the nation, and Jeff Campbell, Jazz Sessions program director, returns to lead the students, faculty and Birch Creek Jazz Orchestra for two two-week sessions at the academy that’s dedicated to musicians ages 13-19.

Favorite performers are also returning for concerts with the orchestra: Katie Ernst (vocals, Jazz I) through July 24; and Mardra Thomas (vocals, Jazz II) and Reggie Thomas (piano – Jazz II), July 28-Aug. 7.

Concerts begin at 7 pm, with pre-concert music under the Jackie and Steve Kane Gazebo at 6:30 pm. Purchase tickets online at birchcreek.org/tickets or by calling 920.868.3763.
