Post-apocalyptic science fiction is not a genre for everyone because it usually involves bleak stories portraying an unlivable world with dislikable characters taking advantage of those who are weaker. The Bear by Andrew Krivak offers a different dystopian world but still has the common elements of love, loss and an epic journey.
In this novel, the land has returned to its natural state long after catastrophic events leave only two human survivors. Beauty and hope live alongside struggle and heartbreak in this wonderfully written fable for adults. And as with all fables, we may not agree with the meaning, which makes this book a great choice for discussion.
