Book Recommendation: ‘The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music’

written and narrated by Dave Grohl

recommended by KARLIE MARTENS, Bookseller, Novel Bay Booksellers

The Foo Fighters – a well-known band since it began performing in 1994 – recently made headlines again with the death of its drummer, Taylor Hawkins.

The lead singer, Dave Grohl, has a long history of success as well, and he’s written his story in a book titled The Storyteller. Although I’m certain it’s lovely to read, listening to it on audio is a whole new experience.

Grohl talks about his life, sharing stories of the highs and lows of touring and starting multiple bands, and tales of growing up and living his life. Memorable stories include his daughter’s first piano lesson being taught by Sir Paul McCartney (because obviously), or how he dropped out of high school (with his teacher mother’s approval) and lied about his age to join his first band.

You get to hear about Grohl’s triumphs and failures, plus some words of wisdom from numerous famous people who make cameo appearances in the story. It’s an entertaining, funny and heartfelt story by a genuine, down-to-earth superstar.

To celebrate National Audiobook Month in June, recommendations this month will highlight audiobooks. If you want to add these stories to your reading list, check out the library’s audiobook services. If the library does not have copies available, buying audiobooks through Libro.fm helps to support independent bookstores. You can even select which bookstore you want to benefit from your purchase.
