Boys Baseball: Eagles Swept by Wolves

Southern Door’s baseball team opened Packerland Conference play at home Tuesday when the Eagles lost both games of their doubleheader against Algoma.

The Wolves jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening frame of the first game and went on to defeat Southern Door, 10-2.

The Eagles’ only scoring came in the fifth inning on a two-run homer from Cash Nellis.

Algoma’s Carson Leist recorded the pitching victory, while Will Jandrin took the loss for Southern Door. At the plate, the Wolves’ Charlie Prokash was the only player with two hits.

Game two went only six innings because of darkness with Algoma pulling out a 2-1 victory.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first behind an RBI single from Isaac Baudhuin. That lead held up until the sixth inning.

Southern Door started on the mound with Tyler Neinas, who allowed only one hit over 4 1/3 innings while being restricted to a pitch count of 35 due to physical issues, said head coach John Berns. Nick Beck closed out the game pitching for the Eagles.

During the approaching darkness, Algoma’s Parker Lischka led off the bottom of the sixth with a fly ball to right field which hopped the fence for a ground-rule double.

Lischka was sacrificed to third base, and then scored on a safety squeeze bunt by Grant Vandervest. The next Algoma batter drew a walk. A pop fly down the left field line off the bat of Leist fell for a run-scoring double to give Algoma the 2-1 win.

Prokash recorded the pitching victory for Algoma, scattering three hits with two hit batters while striking out eight.

Southern Door, which dropped to 0-2 in the conference and 1-2 overall, hosts a non-conference game Friday against Bonduel before the next Packerland doubleheader Saturday at Gibraltar.
