Bridge and Poetry Seminars at Bjorklunden

From Oct. 10 – Oct. 15 Lawrence University’s Bjِrklunden in Baileys Harbor is offering two seminars: “Play Better Bridge: Lessons for the Intermediate and Advancing Bridge Player” and “Nuts, Bolts and Jackhammers: a Poetry Workshop.”

While a basic understanding of the game and experience are necessary for “Play Better Bridge,” the hands-on instructional workshop will provide information and techniques to help participants improve their bidding, their play, and defense. Instructor Norma Hammerberg, an American Contract Bridge League-certified star teacher and director, will focus on providing simple guidelines that will increase players’ confidence.

The Standard American Yellow Card, a user-friendly system, will be the basis for instruction and play. Class members will play prearranged boards, related to the day’s lesson.

“Nuts, Bolts and Jackhammers: a Poetry Workshop,” intended for intermediate and advanced poets, begins with sounds – the soft sounds, hard sounds, clustered sounds, and musical sounds of the English language. Marilyn L. Taylor, Ph.D., the Poet Laureate of the state of Wisconsin, will lead the seminar where participants will also examine rhythms and focus on elements of the line itself.

Taylor has taught for the Honors College at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Redbird Studio in Milwaukee, AllWriters Workplace in Waukesha and for many other venues in the state

and around the country.
