Bridge, Tree and Watercolor Seminars at Björklunden

From Sept. 27 – Oct. 2, Lawrence University’s Björklunden is offering these seminars: “Introduction to Modern Day Bridge” with Carol Konrad; “Fall’s Glorious Trees and Shrubs” with Don Quintenz; and “Watercolor: A Fresh Start” with Helen Klebesadel.

“Introduction to Modern Day Bridge” recognizes that beginning bridge players come with varying levels of knowledge of the game and is designed for absolute beginners as well as those who have had a little bit of experience playing bridge but need a refresher on the basics of the game. The week will finish with a discussion of declarer play as well as some defensive techniques. To accommodate the range of beginners, participants will receive handout materials in advance and will have the opportunity to attend optional afternoon and evening review/discussion sessions. 

Participants will immerse themselves in the most beautiful preserves of Door County each day to learn about which different trees and shrubs grow in what places in “Fall’s Glorious Trees and Shrubs.” The different natural communities create unique physical conditions that encourage certain plants and animals to associate with them. In addition to appreciating the beauty and fascination each species possesses, participants will learn how to identify them, which ones are conducive for landscaping, what conditions are suitable for their propagation based on their requirements, and how wildlife utilize them for food, protection, nesting material, and shelter. Participants must be able to walk on unpaved trails for distances of two miles over a period of 2½ hours.

“Watercolor: A Fresh Start” is designed for absolute beginners as well as for those who have had some experience painting with watercolor but need a refresher to gain the confidence to start again. Seminar participants will explore basic traditional approaches to watercolor painting as well as fresh and experimental watercolor techniques. Seminar participants will go home with the skills and tools to keep on painting.
