Classes at Bjorklunden

From August 29 through September 3 Lawrence University’s Bjِrklunden in Baileys Harbor is offering three seminars: “Wines and Cultural Readings from Spain, Argentina and Chile,” “The Code of the West: Duty, Honor and Responsibility in the Classic American Western Films,” and “The Early Romantic Pianists: Celebrating the 200th Birthdays of Chopin and Schumann.”

“Wines and Cultural Readings from Spain, Argentina and Chile” presented by Rosa Tapia, associate professor of Spanish at Lawrence University, will focus on pairings of select Spanish and South American wines with renowned literary authors from Spain, Argentina, and Chile, including Federico Garcيa Lorca, Jorge Luis Borges, and Nobel Prize winner Pablo Neruda. There will be a materials fee of $15.

“The Code of the West: Duty, Honor and Responsibility in the Classic American Western Films,” presented by author Jack Rhodes, will explore and evaluate the range of choices open to the central and supporting characters in five classic films, comparing and contrasting these films and later versions of similar narratives.

In “The Early Romantic Pianists: Celebrating the 200th Birthdays of Chopin and Schumann,” participants will explore the revolutionary piano music of the 19th century through live performances by concert pianist Anthony Padilla as well as through historic video recordings by great pianists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Seminar classes meet weekday mornings and some evenings. Each seminar includes meals prepared by Bjِrklunden’s resident chef.
