Classes at Bjorklunden

From July 25 through July 30 Lawrence University’s Bjِrklunden in Baileys Harbor is offering three seminars: “The United States and the Greatest Generation, 1929-1945,” “Early Renaissance Art in Florence,” and “Basic Crossword Puzzle Construction.”

“The United States and the Greatest Generation, 1929-1945,” will feature Tim Crain, an assistant professor at UW-Milwaukee. Through the seminar Crain will review the generation that faced two significant challenges in American history: the Great Depression and World War II.

Michael Orr, an accomplished, award-winning professor of art history will teach “Early Renaissance Art in Florence,” which will focus on the key artistic personalities and rivalries that lie behind Florence’s pre-eminence in art during the early Renaissance.

Jim Hilger, who retired from a career in computer systems and analysis and computer education, will teach “Basic Crossword Puzzle Constructions.” Participants of the seminar, which will meet Monday through Thursday from 1 – 5 pm, will explore the nuts and bolts of the entire crossword-making process, including theme development, grid building, word fill selection, clue writing, and submission of the finished puzzle for publication.

Seminar classes meet weekday mornings and some evenings. Each seminar includes meals prepared by Bjِrklunden’s resident chef.
