Contingency Funds Enable Greenhouse at Southern Door

After it was placed on hold due to cost uncertainties this fall, a greenhouse is under construction on the Southern Door County School campus, Miron Construction project executive and vice president Karl Wolfgram told the school board Monday.

“That will move forward as planned,” Wolfgram said, emphasizing that enough contingency funds will remain to allow the greenhouse building construction after completion of the 40-yard indoor practice facility and workout center. The district will seek a grant to outfit the greenhouse with furnishings and hydroponic equipment.

School board president Penny Price said it’s exciting that the foundation is going in and the greenhouse will come to fruition. The greenhouse was part of the $14.9 million capital referendum voters approved in November 2022. A bus-maintenance garage was dropped from the list of voter-approved projects and has not been reinstated at this time.

Wolfgram said the exterior of the building is enclosed, except for a couple of windows, and insulation, interior HVAC and utility lines are going in. Flooring is coming soon, and artificial turf will be installed in July in time for project completion by an Aug. 1 deadline.

The greenhouse has the same completion date.
