Door County Arts: Wozniak’s New Work Closes Back Gallery Series

“Contrast and Compliment,” concrete with smalti, set of four, by Kim Wozniak.

Challenging simple elements into unexpected forms, artist Kim Wozniak is compelled to build, driven by the materials of construction. By juxtaposing these materials she gives them a voice. Through basics learned during formal education and life experience Wozniak has developed a connection between tile, glass, stone and concrete that allows her to create unique, contemporary art. Wozniak is the final artist on exhibit in The Back Gallery Series 2008 at The Flying Pig Gallery and Greenspace from September 6 through October 5.

Wozniak is a Wisconsin based mosaic artist who has always been compelled to “make stuff.” With a formal education in architectural designs, Wozniak is a self taught artist that has worked in many different mediums: ceramics, fabric, paint, glass, and junk. She has studied with the mosaic masters of Italy, Mexico and the United States.

For Wozniak, art is about the construction process, not the finished piece. The excitement for her is in taking everyday materials and joining them together in unconventional ways; her construction process is always an experiment.

“Art for me is a continuous learning experience, and the best days are the days that I learn something new,” said Wozniak. “I use simple materials, concrete, glass, tile, and reclaimed objects of all kinds, once they are adhered to each other they create new objects with new meaning and new purpose.”

Her latest body of work that will be on exhibit at The Flying Pig is about broken-ness. “Everything is broken in all our lives, it’s about seeing through that, seeing the beauty,” said Wozniak. What once were considered finished pieces in her past body of work, are now finished, then broken into pieces and altered-finished. Always an experiment.

The Flying Pig Gallery and Greenspace is located at N6975 Hwy. 42, two miles south of Algoma. The gallery is open daily 9 am – 6 pm. For more information, call 920.487.9902, visit http://www.theflyingpig.biz, or email [email protected].
