Door County Reads Kicks Off Jan. 30

Events are about to get underway for the 2022 Door County Reads,  featuring two books – Population: 485 and Truck: A Love Story – by Wisconsin author Michael Perry. Door County Reads features two weeks of book discussions, play readings and panels centered around the book and its themes.

All events will be presented virtually unless noted. Check the website for the most up-to-date information.

Jan. 30

1 pm: Virtual Kickoff
A retrospective on 15 years of Door County Reads (DCR). Hear from those who brought this festival to life in Door County, including video cameos from the Wisconsin author community and past DCR participants.

Jan. 31

7 pm: Door Shakespeare Play Reading
Essays and short plays from Wisconsin, including work by playwright Thorton Wilder.

Feb. 1

10:30 am: Book Discussion 
Discussing Population: 485. Facilitated by Mary Sawyer. A recording will be made available after the event.

1 pm: Book Discussion 
Discussing Truck: A Love Story. Facilitated by Laura Kayacan. A recording will be made available after the event.

4 pm: Movie Showing
Watch How Ya Doin’, in which celebrated Wisconsin author and humorist Michael Perry looks back on his “Clodhopper” tales of life in Wisconsin with an eye toward how his stories of the past connect us to the future. Discussion afterward facilitated by Jeanine Brennan. 

Feb. 2

11 am: Book Discussion 
Discussing Population: 485. Facilitated by Laura Hale. 

7 pm: Book Discussion
Discussing Truck: A Love Story. Facilitated by Tracy Opper. A recording will be made available after the event.

Feb. 3

5:30 pm: “English in Wisconsin”
Joe Salmons, the Lester W.J. “Smoky” Seifert Professor of Language Sciences at UW-Madison, will explore the kinds of English spoken in our state, including pronunciation, words, word forms and grammar.

7 pm: Book Discussion
Novel Bay Booksellers, 44 N. 3rd Ave. in Sturgeon Bay
Discussing Population: 485. Facilitated by John Berns, owner of Novel Bay.

Feb. 4

7 pm: Play Reading
Performing Dairyland by Heidi Armbruster. Free, but donations are welcome and appreciated. Presented by Third Avenue PlayWorks.

Feb. 5

11 am: Population 30,066: Door County Fire and Rescue Workers Panel and Station Tour  
Panelists include volunteer firefighters from throughout Door County. Moderated by David Siegel, author of Forces of Change: Events That Led to the Development of the Green Bay Fire Department.

2 pm: Author Keynote
A virtual keynote with featured author, Michael Perry.
