Eagle Girls Fly Past Clippers in Second Half

Southern Door’s girls basketball team overcame a three-point halftime deficit Tuesday when the Eagles won their Packerland Conference contest at home over Sturgeon Bay, 50-42.

“We struggled offensively in the second half and [the Eagles] pulled ahead, winning by eight,” said Clippers head coach Dan Tjernagel.

Sturgeon Bay, which was outscored 25-14 in the second half, was led by Cady Carlson with 15 points. Regan Kasten added 11 points, with Dasha Yeltysheva scoring 10 more.

Southern Door’s top-two scorers both tallied double digits in the second half. Payton Gilbertson scored 11 of her game-high 19 points in the final 18 minutes. Sophia Counard added 12 of her 16 points in the second half.

The Eagles, who improved to 2-1 in the conference and 3-4 overall, next have a league game Friday at Algoma.

The Clippers (1-3, 3-4) play a non-conference game Friday at Denmark before their next league game Dec. 21 at Algoma.
