Eagles Send Trio of Wrestlers to Sectionals

Same outcome. Different goal.

That’s the mindset that Southern Door wrestler Grant Englebert has after winning the 152-pound division of the Brillion Regional Saturday and advancing to the Bonduel Sectional.

“Last year I would say that I came into sectionals looking to finish in the top three and just make it through to state,” said Englebert, who placed fifth at 152 pounds at last year’s Division 3 state meet. “This year I’m coming in looking to win it.”

Englebert advanced by pinning Karter Trace from Brillion in the final.

Teammates Griffin Slezewski and Brodie Overbeck will join Englebert at the sectional meet. After receiving two byes, Slezewski pinned Bryer Christel from Reedsville in the 126-pound final.

“Griffin has been working tirelessly to regain his strength and stamina since being cleared in August,” Southern Door Coach Jerry Englebert said. “Today that work paid off as he was ready to compete. He was in complete control from start to finish, easily earning the early pin in the finals.”

Slezewski was sidelined last year by acute myeloid leukemia.

Overbeck advanced at 285 pounds by defeating Reedsville’s Darren Wagner by no contest in the second-place match.

“For Brodie, we felt his best shot was at 285,” Jerry Englebert said. “After wrestling 220 all year, he worked hard to adjust to the extra weight and difference in wrestling 285. Brodie wrestled a really good semifinal match.”
