After recording its first two Packerland Conference losses of the season four days earlier at Kewaunee, this year’s conference champion at 16-0, Southern Door’s baseball team got back on the winning track Friday by sweeping a league doubleheader in Green Bay against NEW Lutheran.
The Eagles won the first game in five innings, 17-0.
Southern Door tallied eight runs on eight hits in the first inning with a rally that included two singles from Tyler Neinas, a double from Jared Hawkey, a 2-RBI triple from Christian Counard, and a bases-clearing triple from Derek Schinktgen.
Neinas led the Eagles’ 17-hit offensive by batting 4-4, while Jack Peterson went 3-4, including a fourth-inning solo home run.
Counard, Hawkey and Will Jandrin added two hits apiece.
On the mound for Southern Door, Jandrin pitched a no-hitter, striking out nine and walking four.
Eagles 8, Blazers 7
The lead changed hands in the second game, which featured the Eagles coming from behind three different times before winning 8-7 in a contest stopped by darkness after six innings.
NEW Lutheran took to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first and added a run in the second inning to go up 4-0.
Southern Door responded with two runs in both the second and third innings to tie the score at 4-4.
The Blazers regained the lead with a run in the top of the fourth, before a triple by Neinas in the bottom of the frame tied the score at 5-5.
The Eagles took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Matthew Malvitz led off with a triple and scored on a throwing error.
The sixth and final inning saw Jandrin take the mound to save the win for Nick Beck. However, with two outs and noone on base, a single, walk, and an error produced two unearned runs for NEW Lutheran, and the Eagles came up for their final at-bat trailing 7-6.
A leadoff single by Neinas started the winning rally. After an infield ground out, Counard tripled to the right-center field gap for his
third triple of the day and tied the score at 7-7, and Jandrin immediately followed with a walk-off single up the middle.
The two wins improved Southern Door’s season record to 16-3 overall and 12-2 in the conference.
The Eagles close out their regular season Monday afternoon when they host a league doubleheader against Sturgeon Bay.
Southern Door opens the WIAA Division 3 Tournament at home May 30 when the No. 3-seeded Eagles will host a regional semifinal against the winner of the May 25 quarterfinal between No. 6-seeded Howards Grove and No. 11-seeded Valders.
