Egg Harbor Detours Began Jan. 2

Village and state maps provide alternate routes

Signs near Sturgeon Bay soon will advise state Highway 42 motorists to use a state-approved detour on state Highway 57 and completely skip Carlsville and the Village of Egg Harbor.

But village officials assured people still can make it to downtown Egg Harbor throughout the Hwy. 42 construction that will start Tuesday, Jan. 2 and continue periodically into 2025.

Roads and businesses will be accessible, the village stated when releasing its Construction Accessibility Plan and map.

Northbound motorists and delivery drivers can access downtown businesses by taking Harbor School Road to Church Street and using Orchard Road, Market Street and County Road E as lateral access points.

The bulk of the project between County Road E and Harbor School Road – reconstruction of the streetscape and the burying of utilities in the core section – will not begin until February. However, electrical contractors began work replacing all streetlights in the center of the village on Jan. 3, and the timeframe of the detour may be extended in the core portion downtown as contractors bury utilities.

Village President John Heller said one lane downtown should remain open on 42 during work, though not to thru-traffic.

The work scheduled to start Jan 2 includes a section between Cty. E and Harbor Heights/the north end of Church Street, and between Harbor School Road and South Trail Road/Cty Road T. To expedite work, there is a north crew and south crew. In April, the village and contractors will decide whether to continue construction on weekdays in June rather than stopping at Memorial Day, said Megan Sawyer, village administrator.

The village provides more-detailed information on its website, including a list of alternate routes, and the state site will include updates and more.

While there’s little reason to follow it for most types of traffic, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s official detour route is Hwy. 57 to County Road V to County Road A to County Road EE.

Detour signs will be removed during weekends May 24-June 23, and construction and the detour will pause from June 28 until September.

Hwy. 42 construction will resume during September, with the highway open to traffic and flaggers present for traffic control.

The detours are scheduled to resume on Oct. 21 after major fall festivals.

The Village of Egg Harbor provided these alternate routes to the local business district, as a year-long state Highway 42 construction project got underway Jan. 2. Submitted.
