Egg Harbor Seeks Public Input on Construction Plans

The Egg Harbor Village Board of Trustees, Parks and Public Works Committee and staff are holding meetings in the village hall on April 21-22 to gather public input on planned construction. The project affects the corridor between Harbor School Road and County E, State Hwy. 42 running through the village, the intersection of Hwy. 42 and County G in the village, the intersection of G and South Trail near the beach, and all sidewalks and walking paths. The construction improves the quality of life for residents and the overall experience for visitors.

The village has hired two firms with strong experience in architecture, engineering and planning – SmithGroupJJR, Madison, and McMahon Group, Neenah, who will guide the actual work of designing improvements which conform to applicable standards, enhance accessibility for mobility-limited pedestrians, and create the details that provide a sense of place and interest, as well as the permitting aspects of the project.

On April 21, the village’s engineering and planning firms will be at the meeting to explain the project scope and gather community input. On the morning of April 22, the firms will summarize top ideas, and invite the community to review scenarios and select a concept.

Village trustees approved the design services contracts in February of 2015 and planning began immediately. Construction is expected to begin in December 2015 and be finished by June 2016.

“We have crumbling curbs, uneven and broken sidewalks, and it’s nearly impossible for pedestrians to walk across the street summer through fall,” says Egg Harbor Village Administrator Josh Van Lieshout. “We are taking extra strides with the business community and residents to be transparent about the process. We welcome the community’s input to enhance Egg Harbor.”

The public is invited to the meeting from 6-8 pm on April 21 in the village hall and from noon to 2 pm on April 22.

Ideas include:

• Purchase new benches, litter receptacles, bollards and bike stands.

• Make improvements to streetlights, tree grates, landscaping and irrigation.

• Add energy efficient and environmentally sustainable design features.

• Reduce the highway corridor to make it safer for pedestrians.

• Bury the overhead utilities.

• Enhance the walking paths throughout the village.

• Create more on-street parking.

• Improve access to Horseshoe Bay Trail and Beach View Park from the downtown area.
